Authentic american anime by porkcow Authentic american anime by porkcow
What I was going for here was authenticity to the anime style as I have seen it. I knew from watching shows that were not anime that having characters that have different eyes and different expressions detracted from the story, but just made me think "wait, who is that? Why do they look different? Why is the story over in just one episode?" I also realized from watching anime from japan that there was a danger of having too many colors. I remember watching that dreadful show, FLCL and thinking "why did his eyebrows change colors? Why is that hand a photo? why is that city so big?" and it just distracted me from the atmosphere of the scenes. My other problem with that show is that it just appeared wild, like the stretchy animation was merely a result of the gags and the action rather than headlumps, and this is where american emulations of anime have perfected the formula. No distractions, no extra colors, no crazy faces, just an emphasis on peacefulness. I hope I have perfected these principles.

You know how we make a childish hollow anime in America? Watch season one of Ben Ten.

Yeah, the heads are wayy too big. I hate FLCL but the manga was originally released in the US not japan. Its written by a Japanese guy and published in the us, making it.. I have no idea.. a hybrid. American anime is generally terrible in my opinion. Often poorly drawn, the only benefit they have is changing the characters enough to make them different from each other which is adapted from traditional comic book style. Marvel and Dc have their own formulas for comic success, I read a few books on their process. The art books written by Americans are often disgustingly colored and poorly drawn and I can't even call it manga.
I hate watching anime in English because usually they are dubbed by poor voice actors. Card captor sakura ,Inuyasha and others all have horrible voice acting. Find a better representation for anime, I suggest Elfen Lied.

I agreed with all your points, and then I watched Elfen Lied (subbed). No offense, and I know it has some adequate storytelling later on (watched a spoiler already), but this is the production meeting that was going on in my head while I watched Ep. 1:

Buta: "Hey, I know what we're doing. We're making a cartoon about a scantily clad Pink haired girl with special powers and the personality of a half-dead bee."

Cho:"But boss, we're already making about 10 shows that cater to- um, can... you be more specific?"

Buta: "Alright, she's stark nude and wears a helmet with no eyesight." *licks lips suggestively*

Cho: "That's... a little better. Wait why is she-"

Buta: "Money."

Cho: "Ooookay. Oh, is she in a prison for supervillians and they have to remove everything on her person or she'll psychokinetically strangle them with her pants?"

Buta: "Exactly! Ratings! Oh and have guns at the beginning. Lots of guns."

Cho: "Hey yeah, we can have her escape from the facility at the beginning and create some mystery about who the bad guys are."

Buta: "And have her kill the girl who got my coffee wrong this morning."

Cho: "but that would ruin the mystery of who-"

Buta: "And put my kids in it. They'll star in a cartoon for their birthday present."

Cho: "I'm sure we could go in a more interesting direction if we-"

Buta: "Hey, who's got two thumbs and can fire you if I don't get my my fantasy- er, my highly artistic vision realized pronto?! Wait what are you drawing? Save that zany nonesense for Tonogata Gomen whatever-it's-called and draw from the bases we gave you!"

Cho: "We're peddling hollow badly-paced smut aren't we?"

Buta: "That's the spirit!"

I realized Elfen lied was not the best choice. Every show no matter its subject of course wants high ratings, what would a good show be without its signature features. Elfen lied differs from normal animes with its gore. The majority of people who have seen it all love the show.

Yeah, I admit to watching and enjoying all of Wolf's Rain, and it's another show that's made to be enjoyed as a whole with no expectation of traditional story arcs or meaning. But maybe a better defense of anime would be something that works in small bites, like stuff from the golden age. Personally, I greatly prefer Urusei Yatsura to either Wolf or Elfin (and I've only seen one episode). It's better paced, less uncomfortable to watch, funny, has interestingly flawed but balanced characters, has recognizeable designs and is less predictable. But I will concede, watching metal twist and blood gloop around is somewhat mesmerizing.

Not bad, but you still have much too learn. For one thing, there are WAY too many non-white people on this. Who the hell wants to see non-white people when there could be more white people? What is going on here?
